It is not possible for a Catholic to entertain any schemata for health care reform under this administration, which is aggressively pursuing the politics of reproductive death throughout out the world. There is no way we can trust this government with the kind of power it would have if it partially socializes medicine. This issue has not come up because our most prevalent form of socialized healthcare, Medicare, is not an aborting or contracepting demographic. There is no way it won't be an issue with a younger age group. There is no possible way to allow the discussion to even go forward without the forwarning, Catholics cannot pass Go if abortion is not addressed.

Respect for life is number one on the bishops list, but they do not say it is inviolable or inseparable ('all or nothing' is what I'm trying to say), and already commentators are moving it to the middle, and acting as if we could actually negotiate for a given number out of their guidelines, rather than all or nothing.

This is terribly painful to say. Two of my children do not have health coverage. It will be terribly painful in future, as Catholics will take the hit, "the reason we don't have health care reform is those damn Catlics," and even possibly reprisals of one kind or another. But we must quit talking as if health care reform is possible. It is not possible with this government.
